Employer Cost Sharing

The Access to Work grant can pay up to 100 per cent of the approved costs if your employee is:

  • unemployed and starting a new job
  • in employment, but has been working for you for less than six weeks


The Access to Work grant will pay a proportion of the costs of support if all of the following apply to your employee:

  • they've been in the job for six weeks or more
  • they need Assistive Technology or adaptations to premises


Cost Sharing Amounts

The precise level of cost sharing is determined as follows:
  • 1-9 Employees

    Employer Pays: nothing
  • 10-49 Employees

    Employer Pays: First £300.00 Plus 20% of cost up to £10,000.00
  • 50-249 Employees

    Employer Pays: First £500.00 Plus 20% of cost up to £10,000.00
  • 250+ Employees

    Employer Pays: First £1,000.00 Plus 20% of cost up to £10,000.00

After between one and three years, Access to Work will review your circumstances and the support you're receiving.

Further Information

Employees: 1-9

For employers with less than 10 members staff Access to Work will pay 100% of the costs.


Employees: 10-49

For employers with 10 to 49 members staff the employer will have to pay the first £300 and Access to Work can then pay up to 80% of the costs up to £10,000.


Employees: 50-249

For employers with 50 to 249 members of staff the employer will have to pay the first £500 and Access to Work can then pay up to 80% of the costs up to £10,000.

Employees: 250+

For large employers with 250 or more members of staff the employer will have to pay the first £1000 and Access to Work can then pay up to 80% of the costs up to £10,000.

Additional Costs

The Access to Work grant would normally cover all additional costs over £10,000.
