Funding Amounts - Student Finance England
There is a range of help available and a description of this is set out below. The rates given on this page are the maximum amounts you can get. The DSAs you receive will depend on what is discussed in your Study Needs Assessment. These allowances are paid on top of the standard student finance package, they do not have to be paid back.
The amount you get depends on the Funding Provider and the type of extra help you need - not means tested.
Part-Time Course
To be eligible for DSAs whilst on a part-time undergraduate or postgraduate course it will need to last for at least one year and does not take more than four times as long to complete as an equivalent full-time course.
Undergraduate
The figures shown below are the maximum amounts of help available from Student Finance England
Academic Year: 2011/2012
Postgraduate
For Full-Time and Part-Time postgraduate students there is a single Disabled Student Allowance of up to £10,260.00 per year from SFE. For other Provider's amounts see: Other Funding Providers
This allowance can be used for: Specialist Equipment, Non-Medical Helpers, Extra Travel Costs and Other additional course related costs.
Teacher Training
Students on Full-Time Initial Teacher Training (ITT) Courses are eligible for the Full-Time Disabled Students Allowance package
Students on Part-Time ITT Courses are eligible for the Part-Time DSA package.
Specialist Equipment Allowance
This allowance can be used to pay for items such as computer equipment, specialist software, furniture, or other specialist equipment.
It also covers insurance and support for the equipment for the duration of your course.
Specialist Support (Non-Medical Helper's) Allowance
This allowance can be used to pay for a support worker, personal assistant or other helper you need to benefit fully from your course.
This can also include: non subject specific study skills, notetakers, library assistant, study mentors, etc.
This does not include extra tuition for your course.
This allowance can be used for any additional costs not covered by the other allowances, for example, extra books, photocopying, and ink cartridges.
It can possibly be used for extra accommodation costs, as well as being used to 'top up' the specialist equipment and non-medical helper's allowances.
This allowance can be used to claim for reasonable additional travel costs for the academic year due to your disability.
This is not normally for everyday travel costs which any student would expect to have. For example, if you need a taxi whilst most other students use public transport, you will receive the difference between the two fares.
